Having your teeth whitened at home versus having them whitened at the dentist.

A few years ago the only option was to have your teeth whitened at the dentist, this is no longer the case, even if Dentists would like to convince you otherwise.

When you have your teeth whitened at the dentist there are two main options which are laser whitening and tray based whitening. Dentists like to play on the fact that this is a medical procedure and you should only be having a procedure like this done with a dental professional. Whilst there are a couple of minor problems that can occur, they are more in the uncomfortable range than life threatening, so you’re extremely unlikely to do any harm to your teeth by doing it yourself.

The main advantage at the dentist is that, in most cases, they will have done this procedure countless time. Looking at the colour of your teeth they can tell you what to expect and how long it will take, they should also be able to deliver on their promises, something that not all home whitening kits are able to do. If you opt for laser whitening this is very quick and will not take much longer than an hour from start to finish. If you use a tray based system that will take a little longer, they will have to take impressions of your teeth and send them away to a lab to have custom trays made. Because these are made in a lab they will be a perfect fit which is very effective for whitening your teeth, there are few gaps for the gel to leak out of.

So that is the good news, now take a look around the flashy dental office, the receptionist, the swish central address, you’re paying for all of this which is why it’s more expensive.

If you use a home whitening kit probably the best and easiest option is a tray based kit, these use thermoform mouth trays which become flexible when heated up and can then be moulded to your teeth. They are never going to be as exact a fit as custom lab trays but if done properly they can provide a very good fit which is almost as good as those expensive lab trays.

You apply the gel into these trays which you then affix over your teeth from several hours to overnight. You can buy different strengths of gel, the higher the percentage the faster it works and also the higher the percentage the more likely you will experience some temporary sensitivity to your teeth and gums, this is not dangerous but it can be uncomfortable.

As you can see the home based system is relatively simple to use and for the difference in cost is a much better option than the dentist whitening offerings. Having your teeth whitened is much more similar to a cosmetic procedure nowadays and because of this you don’t really need the added expense of a trained dentist. If you have tooth ache or need braces that is the best time to visit your dentist but if you just want a brighter smile then home based whitening is the way to go.
